With the Riga City Council decision No 512, agreed upon on November 3, 2009, the Education, Youth, and Sports Department of Riga City Council and the Culture Department of Riga City Council was recognized to begin working under a new name beginning January 2010: the Education, Culture, and Sports Department of Riga City Council (RD IKSD).
The Department is accountable for more than 300 municipal entities: 148 kindergartens; 101 schools; 8 hobby centers; 9 art and music schools and 10 sport schools. Also 3 culture centers; Riga Municipality’s culture institution’s 9 branches; Riga Central Library’s 24 branches, and professional orchestra “Riga”. The Department also has the following facilities under its jurisdiction Education and Information Services of Riga City (RIIMC).
As such, RD IKSD is responsible for the budget, and investment and spending planning of its jurisdictional facilities as well as submitting a planned budget for education, culture, youth, and sports and investment overview to Riga Municipality. In order to actuate all aspects within its accountability, the Education, Culture, and Sports Department of Riga City Council employs multiple Boards: Education Board, Culture Board, Sports and Youth Board, Administrative Board, Finance Board, and other offices: Audit and Corrections Office, Legal Office, Project and Social Integration Office, as well as the Director’s Office.
